Bright Lights, Green Sights is a speaker series to highlight and uplift voices that are traditionally underrepresented in the environmental and entrepreneurship studies. Recognizing that there are a lot of white men talking about problems and solutions, we want to diversify that collection of voices with innovative ideas. Consequently, we are really excited to have Vina Lustado from Sol Haus Design talk to us about the innovation that she’s carrying out. Vina is one of 10 siblings, born in the Philippines, and then immigrated to Los Angeles. She completed her Bachelor’s of Architecture degree from University of Southern California in 1991. She spent the following 20 years working for commercial and residential high-end architecture design firms. Before going abroad and deciding to re-orient her work, she decided to focus more on human-centered design. In 2010, Vina founded Sol Haus Design which is a firm that focuses on sustainability, efficiency, conservation of resources, and quality of living. Beyond the use of the word sustainability as a concept that focuses only on the ecological dimensions of the environment, Vina is also interested in affordability – ensuring that her sustainable innovations are accessible to a wider scope, beyond the premiums that a lot of companies charge for their sustainable products- which is a simple but revolutionary belief. Vina’s work has been covered in a number of architecture books and journals, and her tiny house has left quite an impression on her clients and fellow designers. She was named in 2015 as one of the “100 Most Influential Filipino Women in the World
